ANDY MCLAUCHLIN

Andy Mclauchlin:
Flute, pibgorn, and whistle

Originally from St Albans (named after Britain's first Christian martyr), Andy now lives in Bethesda, Gwynedd. At primary school the rule was "football if it's dry, country dancing if it's wet". It rained a lot in the 60s so he became better at dancing than football. Whilst studying Biochemistry & Soil Science at Bangor University where it was still raining, Andy revived his love of traditional music & dance & eventually defected from the bassoon section in the college orchestra (Well, there's only so many times you can play Verdi's Requiem and have you SEEN the bassoon obbligato in the 'Quid Sum Miser' section? - Andy) to play in sessions and dance groups.

His first traditional instrument was the simple system flute (what's the matter Andy, too many keys on the bassoon then? - Huw) but after hearing instrument maker Jonathan Shorland perform, he also took up the pibgorn (no keys, now THAT'S what I call an instrument - A).
In an alternative life, Andy is a Research Scientist at the Biocomposites Centre (www.bc.bangor.ac.uk) where he's currently researching into non-food crops for industry. That means looking for alternative uses for straw other than haystacks.
Since living in Bethesda (annual rainfall 60") Andy's dancing has improved but he's still rubbish at football.
